Katarina began to skate at the age of five old. Her talent soon became obvious and she was accepted to a special school that caters to children who have a passion to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. This is where she met her teacher Jutta M ller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982, when she came second in the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught everyone's attention immediately, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the game. Olympic success at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female bronze medal in figure skating after an extremely close contest. A few years later she took home an even tougher competition. The free skater was unable to win, but she won the gold medal in the figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt is the first figure skater female who has won the same competition twice, after Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating following her successes as a movie actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win a medal. It was in 1995 that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
